A solemn turn of events overshadowed the final moments of a three-day excursion on the P&O Pacific Adventure, a cruise celebrating the legendary Elvis Presley.
Early Monday morning, as the annual “Tribute To The King” Elvis-themed cruise was concluding, a passenger was reported missing, triggering a rigorous search and rescue mission.
Theme Cruise Turns To Tragedy
Sadly what was meant to be a fun-filled tribute cruise aboard P&O’s Pacific Adventure ship, ended tragically when a passenger was reported overboard about ten nautical miles from Sydney Heads near the entrance to Sydney Harbour.
The ship’s crew alerted authorities around 4 AM, and the vessel paused its route to Sydney cruise port to aid in the search efforts. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre spearheaded the operation.
Utilizing technology such as infrared sensors and conventional search and rescue methods, a helicopter and nearby vessels scanned the area. The search was reported to be hampered by challenging sea conditions with 5-meter high swells and wind speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour.
The search sadly ended after more than six hours with the recovery of the man’s body around 10:30 AM.
About Pacific Adventure
The P&O Pacific Aventure was built in 2001 and normally carries around 2600 guests. It recently had major renovations undergoing dry dock upgrades in Singapore in April of this year.
A P&O Cruises spokesperson expressed condolenses to the family of the guest and thanked cruise guests for their patience during the search and rescue operation.
Following the incident, the Pacific Adventure’s docking in Sydney was delayed, affecting later schedules as the ship was meant to depart on another cruise that afternoon.
This event echoes a similar tragedy from April last year where, despite diligent search efforts, a passenger overboard from another Australian departing ship was never found.
Major cruise lines have been criticized in the past for failing to install the latest Man-Overboard warning systems (MOB) which can quickly pinpoint and lock on to the precise location of a body in the water. However, it is not known if such a system could have helped in this particular tragedy.
