At an event at held yesterday at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, Royal Caribbean International officially welcomed its newest ship to its fleet, Utopia of the Seas.
The ship, which Royal Caribbean claim to be “designed for the ultimate short getaway”, is set to debut with 3- and 4-night cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida, starting on July 19.
This milestone marks a significant addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet, as it will be the first of its Oasis Class to focus on shorter cruises.
Utopia of the Seas will be the sixth Oasis class ship. At 236,860 gross registered tons and measuring 1,188 feet in length, Utopia of the Seas surpasses the size of Wonder of the Seas, the latest Oasis Class ship which debuted in 2022.
This make is now the second largest passenger ship in the World. The largest of course is Icon of the Seas, which made its debut earlier this year.
Formal Handover Attended By Crew And Engineers
On June 14, 2024, the delivery of Utopia of the Seas was marked by a formal handover attended by over 1,600 crew members and workers.
The event was held in the ship’s stunning AquaTheater, where Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley celebrated the achievements of the engineers, designers, and architects involved in the ship’s creation.
Joining them for the official handover was Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the shipyard responsible for the ship’s construction as well as Gus Andersson who will Captain the ship.
A New Evolution in Weekend Cruising
Jason Liberty highlighted the importance of this milestone: “Taking delivery of Utopia of the Seas is an incredibly important milestone, as it marks yet another evolution of our game-changing ships and our mission to create the best vacation experiences responsibly.”
He emphasized Royal Caribbean’s commitment to offering a variety of vacation options that create priceless memories for guests.
Michael Bayley expressed excitement about Utopia’s debut: “With the delivery of Utopia of the Seas, we have the keys to the ultimate weekend. This is the short vacation that packs everything in to make amazing memories in a 3-night weekend or 4-night weekday getaway.”
New Features and Attractions
Utopia of the Seas promises an array of amenities and activities designed to cater to a wide range of preferences.
The ship features over 40 dining, drinking, and entertainment options, multiple pools, and a variety of thrilling activities. Notable highlights include:
- Pool Experiences: The ship boasts five pools catering to different moods, from resort-style and beach-entry pools to adults-only and exclusive suite pools. The Lime & Coconut bars, The Perfect Storm waterslides, and a new poolside food truck, Spare Tire, add to the poolside experience.
- Thrills and Adventures: Guests can enjoy the FlowRider surf simulator, a 10-story zip line, and the Ultimate Abyss, the longest dry slide at sea, now 43 feet longer with new zoom booster rollers and transparent racing windows.
- Perfect Day at CocoCay: CocoCay is central to the itinerary of the short cruises being offered on Utopia. The private island offers an enhanced experience with a newly opened adults-only Hideaway Beach, featuring a private beach, pools, and a live DJ. The island also boasts 14 waterslides and the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean.
Innovative Dining and Entertainment
On Oasis Class ships, the dining options are extensive. However on Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean have taken an innovative step forward with the addition of “The Royal Railway – Utopia Station”.
This new restaurant offers a unique dining experience, transporting guests on a simulated “train journey” to different destinations through food and technology.
Izumi in the Park features sushi and Japanese-inspired street food, while Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar now spans two stories with outdoor seating.
The Pesky Parrot Caribbean tiki bar and a variety of live music and entertainment options ensure that every moment on board is memorable.
Two Casinos and Old Favorites Return
For those who enjoy gaming, Utopia of the Seas offers two casinos with over 370 slot machines and nearly 30 table games.
Additional attractions include old favorites like The Mason Jar Southern Restaurant & Bar, twin rock climbing walls, Utopia Playscape for kids, and the Splashaway Bay aqua park.
Upcoming Debut
As Utopia of the Seas makes its way to the U.S. for its inaugural cruise, the Royal Caribbean team is finalizing preparations to ensure the ship is ready for its first guests.
