Finding the perfect cruise can seem daunting. There are so many choices. What cruise line? What itinerary? What type of cabin? However, if you can initially focus on your age and interests then you might find that it makes the task easier.
Whether you’re a young couple seeking adventure or a retiree looking for relaxation, choosing the right cruise is key. Budget cruise lines like Carnival or MSC Cruises offer affordable options with great customer experiences—ideal for those looking to keep costs low without sacrificing quality.
For those in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, lines like Princess, P&O Cruises and Holland America are popular due to their more relaxed atmosphere and tailored activities. An average age of 57 at Princess or 70 at Holland America indicates a focus on mature couples enjoying quieter, more laid-back experiences.
Younger travelers or families seeking excitement can look towards companies making efforts to cater to U.S. markets, like Royal Caribbean, which has launched cruise ships that almost resemble theme parks to lure new and youngers guests.
Or you might even consider the king of theme parks itself and indulge in a Disney Cruise.
Among other cruise lines, you might fined themed nights, dazzling shows, and amenities like Michelin-inspired dining to ensure there’s something for everyone. This makes it easier to tailor your cruise to your specific interests and age group.
Determining Your Cruise Goals and Preferences
Selecting the perfect cruise involves pinpointing your travel goals, understanding your age and lifestyle needs, and choosing among all the various cruise types out there. Although it may seem daunting, this will help ensure your cruise is everything you want it to be and more.
Step 1 – Identify Your Travel Goals
First of all, think about what you want from your vacation. Do you prefer lounging on sunny Caribbean beaches, or exploring historic sites in Europe?
Adventure seekers might enjoy cruises that offer scuba diving and zip-lining, while relaxation enthusiasts may crave luxurious spa services and poolside cocktails.
Make a list of your top interests. Consider whether you want to visit multiple destinations or spend more time at sea.
Choose an itinerary that matches those preferences. For instance, an Alaskan cruise might be perfect for nature lovers. Meanwhile, a Mediterranean cruise could appeal if you’re interested in cultures and cuisines.
Step 2 – Consider Your Age and Lifestyle
Your age and lifestyle play a crucial role in selecting the right cruise. Younger travelers and families might prefer ships with expansive water parks, themed entertainment, and kid-friendly activities.
On the other hand, retirees and older adults might seek quieter cruises with enriching programs like lectures or wine tastings. Consider also whether you want to travel with kids, as some cruise lines cater specifically to families with onboard nurseries and teen hangouts.
Couples looking for a romantic trip might prefer adults-only cruises like Virgin Voyages that offer cruises with zero children on board.
Evaluate the cruise line’s demographic and activities to ensure they align with your lifestyle.
Step 3 – Understanding the Different Types of Cruises Available
Cruises vary greatly in terms of atmosphere, activities, and pricing.
Luxury cruises offer high-end amenities, personalized service, and often smaller, more refined ships. On the other hand, budget-friendly cruises may have fewer inclusions but provide a solid travel experience at a lower price.
Destination-focused cruises tailor their activities and excursions around the ports visited. This is great if you are keen on exploring new places.
On the other hand, large cruise ships like those from major lines such as NCL or Royal Caribbean provide a floating resort experience with numerous onboard activities and dining options.
Decide whether you want an all-inclusive package or prefer pay-as-you-go options for excursions and dining. Choose the type of cruise that best suits your budget and travel expectations.
Matching Your Budget with Cruise Options
Now that you’ve perhaps got some idea of the type of cruise you would like to go on and even the itininerary, you’ll also need to ensure that your expectations align with your available budget.
You’ll want to consider the cost differences between budget and luxury lines, where to find the best value, and any extra expenses that might arise.
Step 4 – Cost Comparison
Comparing costs between cruise lines can help you find the best fit for your budget.
Budget cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruise Lines, and MSC Cruises offer more affordable options. Prices for these cruises are generally lower, but they still provide a great experience with well-maintained ships and good customer service.
On the other hand, luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Regent, and Seabourn cater to those willing to spend more for premium services. These include butler service and smaller, more intimate ships. While the price is higher, you can expect a more luxurious experience.
Cruise length also affects the price. Shorter cruises (3-5 days) tend to be less expensive than longer voyages. However, you can get “more bang for your buck” with longer cruises typically having a lower cost per day. Evaluating these factors will help you select a cruise that fits both your budget and desired experience.
Step 5- Identifying Value
This step is crucial. Up until now, Cruise Lines and travel agents have promoted cruise based on the “cruise fare” (although this may be changing due to recent Californian State legislation on advertised prices). However it’s important to realize, the final price of your cruise can be much more expensive.
As well as the cruise fare you will need to add port taxes, sales taxes and you should also allow for the cost of the recommended gratuities.
Furthermore, some cruises might have a lower upfront total cost but add significant charges for things like specialty dining, certain activities, and shore excursions.
To give you a real example, I have in the past, been able to book a week-long cruise with Royal Caribbean for well under a thousand dollars per person. But then when I went to add their deluxe beverage package, the cost of the package was more than the cost of the cruise LOL.
Check for deals and packages like NCL’s “Free At Sea” that might offer discounts or added benefits like free drinks, Wi-Fi, or shore excursion credits. These packages can provide excellent value for your money.
Inside cabins without windows often offer the lowest fares. If you don’t mind a lack of view, these can be a very cost-effective choice. Alternatively, suites and ocean-view staterooms come at a higher price but provide additional comfort and amenities.
Step 6 – Budget for the Extra Expenses That You Will Need to Consider
I mentioned these earlier, but gratuities can be easily overlooked. They are typically charged per day per person, and are usually charged directly to your onboard account, so can add up quickly for the unawares.
Be sure to check if they are included in your fare or if they will be an extra charge. Sometimes it can help budgetting if you pre-pay them as part of your booking.
Shore excursions and activities at ports of call are often not included in the base price. These can range from affordable walking tours to expensive excursions, so factor these into your overall budget.
Other potential extra costs include specialty dining, alcoholic beverages/drinks packages, and spa treatments.
Research what amenities and services are included and plan for any that might not be to avoid unwelcome surprises on your bill. Keeping these in mind will help you stay within your budget while enjoying your cruise fully.

Choosing the right onboard amenities and activities that match your planning steps 1 to 3 can make your cruise experience more enjoyable and much more memorable.
Whether you’re traveling with family, looking to unwind, or seeking entertainment, there are options tailored to diverse interests and age groups.
Step 7 – Planning ship-Board Activities
Cruise lines like Carnival Cruise Line are known for their “Fun Ships” with activities catered to all age groups. For kids and teens, you’ll find waterslides, mini-golf courses, and arcades. Many ships offer kids’ clubs with supervised programs, giving parents a chance to relax.
Royal Caribbean also provides Rock Climbing Walls and FlowRider Surf Simulators that appeal to adventurous youngsters and adults alike.
Consider the dining options available – as well as the main dining room you’ll also find options for buffet-style eateries and specialty restaurants.
Step 8 – Decide If You Need Any Relaxation and Spa Services
Most cruise lines feature luxury spa services for those looking to unwind. MSC Cruises, for example, has extensive spa facilities, offering treatments like massages, facials, and aromatherapy.
Many ships have adult-only retreat areas, such as the Serenity area on Carnival, or Spice H20 on NCL, where you can enjoy a peaceful ambiance away from the bustling main decks.
Additionally, some ships include thermal suites with saunas and steam rooms. Booking a spa package can be a fantastic way to enhance your cruise experience with daily pampering sessions.
Step 9 – Consider the Type of Entertainment and Nightlife You Enjoy
Nightlife on a cruise ship can be as dynamic or as laid-back as you desire. For instance Norwegian Cruise Line is popular for their Broadway-style shows, while Royal Caribbean has incredible “Aqua shows” that would be worth of Cirque Du Soleil.
When the sun sets, venues like comedy clubs, piano bars, and nightclubs come to life. For those who prefer a quieter evening, most ships offer outdoor movie nights under the stars.
Booking and Preparing for Your Cruise
If you have followed steps 1 to 9, you should have a pretty good idea of the type of cruise you are after, what cruise lines to consider and a rough itinerary or location that you want to cruise in.
Now it’s time to book.
Step 10 – Finding the Best Deals
To find great cruise deals, start with extensive research online. Cruise line websites, travel agencies, and discount travel sites are excellent places to look.
If I am flexible on dates, one of my favorite methods is to go to the website of the cruise line I want to book with and go to the “Find A Cruise” page. I then alter the search filters to select the ports I am willing to sail from and the number of days I want to cruise for. Then I simply change the sort feature to list from cruises from lowest cost to highest cost.
This can often reveal cruise bargains for dates I might not have otherwise considered.
Booking early generally results in the lowest prices, but last-minute deals can sometimes offer amazing savings. Consider signing up for newsletters from cruise lines and travel agencies. These often include special promotions and flash sales.
Use comparison tools to see a variety of options side-by-side. Finally, don’t forget to check for any group discounts or loyalty programs you may qualify for.
Step 11 – Deciding (And Knowing) What to Pack
Knowing what to pack for a cruise requires careful consideration of the itinerary and cruise line requirements. Typically, casual clothing for daytime activities, swimwear, and a few formal and smart-casual outfits for evening events are needed. Sadly the tendency is to overpack!
Remember to bring comfortable shoes for excursions and activities on board. Essential items include a valid passport (or proof of ID for US Citiznes leaving and returning to the same US cruise port) , tickets, and travel insurance documents.
Toiletries, medications, and any necessary electronics with their chargers should also make it into your suitcase. Don’t forget sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a small backpack for day trips and excursions.
Step 12 – The Pre-Cruise Checklist
A comprehensive checklist ensures you don’t miss any crucial steps before your cruise. Start by confirming all your travel documents are in order. These include tickets, passports, and visas if required.
Double-check your booking details and any special dietary or accessibility needs with the cruise line.
This one is VERY important – plan to arrive at your departure port at least a day early to avoid any last-minute stress or travel issues. Arrange for transportation to the port, whether through a shuttle service or personal transport.
Lastly, notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with your cards while abroad.
