When planning your next vacation, cruises offer a unique way to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of constant travel. From vibrant cities to pristine beaches, there are countless cruise destinations around the world that cater to all types of travelers.

In this article we are going to look at what we (i.e. Morag and I) think are the top 10 cruise destinations in the World.

Now remember this is just our opinion based on the cruise destinations we’ve visited and the cruise destinations we want to visit. Your opinion might be different – and if it is, we’d love to hear where you recommend visiting in the comments below!

The beauty of cruising is that it combines the luxury of a floating resort with the excitement of visiting new places. It is the classic cliche, but if you’ve never cruised before, imagine waking up each day in a different port, ready to experience a new adventure or simply unwind by the sea. It’s just awesome!

With so many options available, choosing the top cruise destinations can make your trip unforgettable and hassle-free.

So here goes – here is our Top Ten. They could be individual ports, regions or entire countries.

Well let’s start the same way they used to do in the pop charts – in reverse order….

#10 – Croatia

The Stunning KRKA National Park

Croatia is a stunning destination along the Adriatic Sea. You’ll find beautiful coastline, clear waters, and charming cities.

One of the most famous spots is Dubrovnik, known for its old medieval town and impressive architecture. Walking along its ancient city walls is like stepping back in time. Of course if you are a Game of Thrones or House of Dragons fan, you’ll know this City as Kings Landing 😉

Another must-visit is Split. Split has a mix of historic sites and modern life.

The Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is right in the heart of the city. It’s a great place to explore narrow streets and find local shops and cafes.

We managed to visit both Split and Croatia on an Adriatic coast cruise in 2022. They are both on our list to visit again!

Sail the Dalmatian Coast to discover hidden gems like the island of Korčula. It’s believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo and has lovely beaches and vineyards.

Dubrovnik Old Town

The island of Mljet is also worth visiting, especially for its national park and serene lakes.

If you love learning about history, you’ll enjoy the Venetian-era palaces scattered along the coast. Places like Zadar and Šibenik feature beautiful cathedrals and Roman ruins.

Cruising in Croatia also means tasting delicious local food. You can enjoy fresh seafood, olive oil, and local wines in small coastal towns. Each stop offers new flavors and experiences.

The best time to cruise is in the shoulder months of April, May, or October. The weather is pleasant, and it’s less crowded.

So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable trip along Croatia’s beautiful coast.

#9 – Hawaii

Hawaii is a dream destination for many. A cruise offers a unique way to explore these beautiful islands. We were fortunate to spend out honeymoon on a repositioning cruise from Mexico to Hawaii – it was incredible!

From the volcanic landscapes to the stunning beaches, there’s something for everyone.

One of the best parts of a Hawaii cruise is island hopping. You can visit Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island without the hassle of flying between them.

Each island has its charm and activities.

On Oahu, you can explore the vibrant city of Honolulu and visit iconic places like Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor. Don’t miss a hike up Diamond Head for breathtaking views of the island.

In Maui, take a trip to the summit of Haleakala, an inactive volcano that offers spectacular sunrise views. The island is also famous for its picturesque beaches and the scenic Hana Highway.

Kauai, known as the Garden Isle, offers lush landscapes and outdoor adventures. You can visit Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and explore the island’s many hiking trails.

The Big Island is famous for its active volcanoes. You can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. The island also has diverse climates and beautiful waterfalls, like those at Akaka Falls State Park.

A cruise to Hawaii often includes onboard activities and amenities that make the journey enjoyable. Depending on the cruise line, you might find luxurious spas, various dining options, and entertainment that makes the sea days as exciting as the days spent on land.

#8 – Caribbean Cruise

A Caribbean cruise offers sun, sand, and stunning scenery. Picture yourself on a ship drifting through turquoise waters. Stops might include Jamaica, the Bahamas, and St. Maarten. Each island has its own charm and activities.

In Jamaica, you can explore the Dunn’s River Falls. It’s a popular spot where you can climb a waterfall. For relaxation, Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands is perfect.

In St. Maarten, the island is split into Dutch and French sides. Philipsburg is on the Dutch side, with colorful buildings and lively markets.

Some cruises also stop in the Dominican Republic. You can take a tour of Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the Americas. For adventure, there’s zip-lining in Puerto Plata.

Cruise ships themselves vary widely. Some are huge, with multiple pools, theaters, and dining options. Others are smaller, offering a more intimate vibe.

Caribbean cruises provide a mix of relaxation and adventure. They’re family-friendly and romantic, making them a great choice for any traveler. Expect great food, beautiful sights, and friendly locals.

What I personally love about the Caribbean, is that there are so many different islands to see. I’ve done sooooo many Caribbean cruises, but I’ve still got islands to tick off my list.

#7 – Mediterranean Cruise

A Mediterranean cruise is a dream come true for many travelers. You can explore diverse cultures, beautiful landscapes, and historic sites.

Imagine starting your journey in Barcelona, Spain. You can wander through colorful markets and see the impressive Sagrada Familia.

Next, your ship might take you to a port near Rome, Italy. Here, you can visit the Colosseum, the Vatican, and sample delicious pasta.

Or take a cruise that passes the incredible Amalfi coast with such gems as Positano, Ravello and Amalfi Town itself.

A stop in Monaco offers a taste of luxury. You can stroll through grand casinos and visit the famous Monte Carlo.

Then, head to Greece, where you can relax on the stunning beaches of Mykonos or explore ancient ruins in Athens.

Don’t forget about the breathtaking French Riviera. Nice, Cannes, and Marseille offer beautiful views, sunny beaches, and rich history.

Travel with family? Disney Mediterranean cruises ensure your trip is fun for everyone with activities and entertainment.

A Meditteranean cruise offers a wonderful opportunity to tick so many bucket-list destinations off in one go. Make sure you budget for excursions though as some of the Med-ports can be quite a distance from the main attractions.

#6 – Bahamas

Now, I know many of you will see this and go “Bahamas? Meh!”.

That’s basically because we have been spoiled by how easily accessible the Bahamas are from the USA. But we also forget how beautiful it is and how lucky we are that it is effectively on the doorstep of all the major cruise lines.

If you have never been before, the Bahamas is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches. It’s perfect for a short getaway or a longer vacation.

The islands are reachable by many cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, and Carnival Cruise Line. Each offers unique experiences, ensuring you’ll find a cruise that fits your needs.

One highlight of the Bahamas is Nassau, the capital city. Nassau offers a mix of historic sites, shopping, and beautiful beaches. You can explore the vibrant local markets or visit historical landmarks like Fort Fincastle. Nassau is a great spot for picking up souvenirs and experiencing local Bahamian culture.

Another popular stop is Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. This island offers a water park, zip lining, and places to relax. It’s ideal if you’re looking for both adventure and relaxation. With activities like swimming and snorkeling, there’s something for everyone.

Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay is another favorite. This private island offers family-friendly activities, such as character meet-and-greets and beachside barbecues. It’s a fantastic choice for families who want to mix relaxation with Disney’s special touch.

Overall, the Bahamas is an amazing cruise destination with something for everyone. Whether you’re into water sports, shopping, or just lounging on the beach, you’ll find plenty to enjoy.

#5 – Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia is a must-visit cruise destination. The city offers stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as you sail into the harbor. The coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches like Bondi and Manly, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.

In Sydney, you can explore vibrant neighborhoods like The Rocks, which has historic cobblestone streets and lively markets. Darling Harbour is another hotspot with lots of shops, cafes, and attractions like the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Royal Botanic Garden, offering lush landscapes and breathtaking harbor views. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for an unforgettable panorama of the city.

Foodies will love Sydney’s diverse cuisine. From fresh seafood at the Sydney Fish Market to trendy restaurants in Surry Hills, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Don’t forget to try some classic Aussie dishes like a meat pie or some fresh pavlova.

Shopping in Sydney is also a treat. Head to Queen Victoria Building for high-end stores, or check out local boutiques in Paddington. Whether you’re looking for fashion, souvenirs, or unique local crafts, you’ll find plenty of choices.

#4 – Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galápagos Islands in Ecuador are a top cruise destination for nature lovers. On these islands, you can witness an incredible range of unique wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Most visitors explore the islands by cruise ship. This allows you to access remote locations while providing comfortable accommodations. Options range from luxurious yachts to more budget-friendly ships. Consider ships like the Letty, which offers great value with excellent service.

Guided tours accompanied by licensed Ecuadorian naturalists are essential. These guides will help you understand the fragile ecosystems and ensure you visit approved areas. Whether you visit Española Island to see the waved albatross or North Seymour Island to watch blue-footed boobies, you will have fantastic wildlife experiences.

Isabela Island is another spot you won’t want to miss. It’s famous for its long beaches and crystal-clear waters. You can relax on the sandy shores or explore the marine life through snorkeling.

If you’re looking for a mix of adventure and education, a Galápagos cruise should be on your list. With its pristine environment and strict conservation efforts, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable trip while contributing to the protection of these precious islands.

#3 – The Fjords, Norway

Imagine setting sail to one of the most scenic places on Earth. The Fjords in Norway offers a mesmerizing landscape where majestic mountains plunge into deep blue waters. The fjords are a natural wonder that you have to see to believe.

Cruising through these waters, you’ll find yourself surrounded by steep cliffs and serene waterfalls. Every turn reveals a new breathtaking view. The clear air and serene environment make it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One of the highlights of a Fjordland cruise is visiting the small towns along the way. Places like Bergen and Stavanger are brimming with history and charm. In Bergen, you might explore the colorful wooden houses of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For those who love trains, the Flåm Railway offers an unforgettable journey through stunning scenery. This train ride takes you from the fjord up into the mountains, offering spectacular views along the way.

Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy this trip. Fjordland is home to a variety of animals, including seals, eagles, and occasionally, whales. It’s a great way to connect with nature while enjoying the comfortable amenities of a cruise ship.

Pack a good pair of hiking boots. The area offers many trails with panoramic views that are worth the effort. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to take a leisurely walk, there’s a trail for you.

In Fjordland, every moment feels like a postcard coming to life. It’s a destination where nature’s beauty and tranquility await at every turn.

We cruised there in 2023 and it was one of the best cruises we have ever done. It was just wonderful!

Be aware though that the Norwegian authorities have passed laws restricting cruise ship access to the Fjords based on the emission-levels of the ships.

This restriction comes fully in to place in 2026, and ship will need to have zero emissions to be allowed access. At this moment in time, none of the major cruise lines operate such a ship!

Going forward therefore, expect to see Fjords cruises that only port at the sea-ports along the Norwegian coast.

#2 – Alaska, USA

Picture yourself sailing past glaciers and snow-capped mountains. Alaska offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. You can explore this natural beauty from the comfort of a cruise ship.

The wildlife in Alaska is a major highlight. Keep an eye out for whales, sea otters, bald eagles and even bears. These animals are often visible right from the deck.

Juneau, the capital city, is a popular stop. Here, you can walk around the town or take a guided tour to the Mendenhall Glacier. Another great spot is Ketchikan, known for its rich Native American culture and totem poles.

Skagway Harbour, Alaska

Glacier Bay is a must-see. This national park is full of stunning glaciers and icy fjords. You might even hear the glaciers crack and fall into the water.

For a more intimate experience, consider smaller ships like National Geographic Quest. These vessels can navigate shallow waters and bring you closer to the wildlife and scenery.

Cultural experiences on these cruises are also enriching. From learning about local history to tasting fresh seafood, you’re in for a treat. Most ships offer a variety of dining options featuring local ingredients.

The summer months are the best time to visit. The weather is milder, and the days are longer, giving you more time to explore. The sights and sounds of Alaska make for an unforgettable cruise destination.

#1 – Santorini, Greece

Santorini is one of the most stunning destinations for a cruise. When you arrive at the port in Fira, the capital, you’re greeted by white-washed buildings and breathtaking views of the caldera. The island’s landscape was shaped by a massive volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C., giving it a dramatic and unique look.

As you explore, you’ll find many beautiful spots. The town of Oia is famous for its sunsets, and the blue-domed churches are picture-perfect. Walking through the narrow streets filled with boutiques and cafés feels like stepping into another world.

If you ever get back to the island for a second visit it’s worth looking into a trip to the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. This archaeological site offers a glimpse into life before the volcanic eruption. The preserved buildings and artifacts are fascinating to see.

Santorini is picture perfect!

For a taste of local culture, enjoy some Greek cuisine at one of the tavernas. Fresh seafood, delicious salads, and local wines are a highlight. Santorini’s unique volcanic soil also means the wine here is special.

Visiting Santorini by cruise lets you enjoy all these experiences. Whether you’re wandering through charming villages, tasting local dishes, or relaxing by the sea, Santorini has something for every traveler.

However, being the one of the top ten destinations in the World does not come without its downsides!

Because the island is so popular, up to six cruise ships can be docked per day and the route to the local town requires a trip up a cable car or a long walk up steep and slippy stairs.

My top tip is to book an early excursion and get back on the ship early. Leave it too late and you will hit horrendous queues to get back down the cable car.
