Things To Do in Costa Maya Cruise Port: A Review of Costa Maya Krazy Lobster Restaurant in Mahahual

If you have cruised in the Western Caribbean, or are planning to, then you’ll no doubt be familiar with Costa Maya. You may even have heard of the subject or this review, the Costa Maya Krazy Lobster.

Costa Maya has become a very popular cruise port located on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The port was constructed in 2001 and is designed to resemble an ancient Mayan city.

When we first visited there on Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas in 2019, our first impression was that this is something Disney might have built.

It seems to include everything you have heard about Mexico from the Mayan ruins, right through to the Mariache bands and the “Lucha Libre” wrestling arena. It’s a fantastic port to visit.

But the real adventure begins when you venture beyond the “Disney-style” port into the wonderful little town of Mahahual, home to the subject of this review – the renowned Krazy Lobster restaurant.

Visiting Mahahual is a Must when in Costa Maya

Mahahual is a stunning village located just over a mile and a half from the Cruise Port.  The village runs parallel to the stunning beach. You’ll find lots of bars, restaurants, and craft stalls.

The village is extremely laid back and almost had a bit of a “hippy” vibe to it. We absolutely loved it.

The Krazy Lobster: A Must-Visit Dining Destination

Yes I know This is a Fish and Not a Lobster LOL

Among the many dining options in Costa Maya is The Krazy Lobster.  We stumbled across it, not by choice, but by accident.

By the time we had spent a couple of hours in Mahahuel, it was around 1 pm, so we were getting hungry and I had a craving for seafood.  Alan, however, is not a fan.

Alan checked Tripadvisor and said, let’s give this place a try. It does seafood, but they also have chicken and it’s about 50 yards away.

Sure enough, the restaurant menu offered Seafood, Beef, Chicken, Fish, and Lobster.  The prices seemed reasonable so in we went.

How to Get to The Krazy Lobster

Don’t Do What I Did When Riding an eBike

We had hired electric bikes that day, which was a wonderful way to meander into the village from the Cruise Port. We hired them from Coral Go Experience for just $25 each for the day. Great value.

Now a quick lesson in eBikes. Don’t get on one for the first time and ask what the throttle does and then immediately twist it. The torque on these things is incredible and I instantly ended up in a Cactus tree.

I had to be gently extricated from the tree as there were thorns sticking everywhere. I’ll never do that again!

If you are as accident-prone as I am, you might want to consider walking. 😉 It’s about a mile and a half to get to the village.  Taxis are available as well. Always agree on the fare in advance and be clear about where you are going.

We also saw some fellow cruisers had hired Golf Cart type vehicles as well, but they were much more expensive than the e-bikes.

The Krazy Lobster is about a half mile from the start of the Village strip that runs parallel to the beach and it is literally right on the beach. Just watch out for the red lobster statue!

The Krazy Lobster Menu

Despite the restaurant’s name, the menu is actually quite varied and there was plenty to choose from. Alan is a very plain eater, but even he was happy with the choice available.

Lunch at The Krazy Lobster: How Much Does It Cost?

Price-wise, the restaurant was very reasonable. Everything was priced in US Dollars and ranged in cost from around $9 for Fajitas to $40 for “The Krazy Lobster” itself, which is the restaurant’s specialty.

What About The Krazy Lobster’s Location?

Well, what can I say? This is a location to die for. It’s located directly opposite the Mahahuel Hotel and is right on the beach itself.

It just felt so relaxing and although you were on the beach, you had lots of shade provided by the restaurant canopy structure. There are also hammocks available if you just fancy a cool beer. That nice breeze from the sea just made it perfect.

They also have loungers on the beach and you can stay there all day if you wish. Just open a tab with your assigned waiter and he will look after you all day.

The place can look a little ramshackle but don’t let that put you off.

My Personal Review of The Krazy Lobster – How Good is the Food?

When we arrived at the restaurant the owner, (Mauricio if I remember correctly) greeted us like long-lost friends. He was so friendly.

Even though they were very busy our waiter took the time to talk through the menu and explain what everything was.

I was hungry and after checking Tripadvisor again Alan persuaded me to go the full hog and order “The Krazy Lobster” itself.  Alan ordered the local fish, and we ordered a couple of beers and some nachos to start as well.

After wolfing down our nachos our meals arrived reasonably quickly. I SO wish I had taken pictures of the Krazy Lobster dish. It was so well presented and SO tasty.

Alan said his fish was delicious as well.

We ended up having some more beers and hung around the beach bar for a while. The staff were great and it was such a pleasant way to spend a couple of chilled hours.

I highly recommend The Krazy Lobster for its good food, friendly service, and beautiful location. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning guest, The Krazy Lobster should be on your list of places to visit in Costa Maya.

I can’t wait to go back on our upcoming cruise on Wonder of the Seas in September!

What Others Are Saying About The Krazy Lobster

It’s been a few years since we’ve been to Costa Maya, so I wanted to check that the Krazy Lobster was still getting decent reviews. Well it’s fair to say that the krazy lobster reviews are good!

As I am sure you know, restaurant reviews can be very subjective, and sometimes people are only motivated to leave a review when they have a bad experience. However, if you search Tripadvisor for the “Krazy Lobster Costa Maya”, you’ll see that it has a good rating of 4 and a half stars out of 5.

Most of the recent reviews have all been 5 stars, with any negative reviews usually based on the concern that the waiters tried to “upsell” them to a better dish, or because local vendors would try to sell them stuff.

Just remember you are on a beach. Vendors will try to sell stuff to you, it happens all over the World.

My Verdict: The Costa Maya Krazy Lobster Is Not To Be Missed

Based on my experience, The Costa Maya Krazy Lobster should definitely be on your list of potential lunch stops for anyone visiting Costa Maya on a cruise.

The owner and his staff really do go out of their way to provide you with a wonderful chilled experience and the food honestly is so good!

I’ve already got it in my planner for our Wonder of the Seas cruise in September. See you soon Krazy Lobster!
