But let’s look at the process and provide you with some tips for a quick and easy disembarkation.

Disembarkation Day – Your Cruise is Over and it’s Time to Get Off The Ship
Okay I’ll be right up front with you. I HATE disembarkation day!
Disembarkation day is when all the wonderful memories of our cruise come to an end, and we need to say goodbye to the ship and all the friends we’ve made and prepare for our journeys home.
That sucks! Nobody likes the end of their vacation and then the added stress of getting home.
However, understanding the Royal Caribbean cruise ship disembarkation process and timeline can help us avoid any unnecessary stress and make the most of our final hours on board.
From knowing when to vacate our staterooms to collecting our luggage, we’ll share some pointers based on our own experiences, on how to get off of the ship in as smooth a way as possible.
With over 30-plus years of cruising under our belts, my wife Morag and I have had a LOT of disembarkation days. Some have been smooth, and some have been a complete nightmare.
Fortunately, most of those nightmares were a number of years ago. Modern cruise ports and immigration processes are much smoother and more efficient than they used to be!
You can Dismembark a Royal Caribbean Ship in less than 15 minutes
How long does it take to get off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship? On our last three Royal Caribbean cruises, we were off the ship in less than 15 minutes from leaving our stateroom.
This was Vision of the Seas disembarking at Miami, Mariner of the Seas at Ravenna in Italy and Wonder of the Seas in Port Canaveral. That’s pretty remarkable when you consider the thousands of passengers onboard a ship like Wonder of the Seas.
I will however qualify this, by stating that we do avoid the peak departure times, which tend to be early morning.
Those are actually really good examples, as those are one of the smallest ships in the fleet (Vision), a mid-sized ship (Mariner) and the largest ship (Wonder of the Seas).
Typically you can be off a cruise ship as soon as the ship is cleared for disembarkation by the port authorities.
Royal Caribbean Disembarkation Time – What’s the Earliest You Can Get Off The Ship?
Royal Caribbean disembarkation time is typically as early as 6:45 am. If prefer a later departure just be aware that all guests must leave the ship usually no later than 9:45am. The exact time will vary depending on your ship, the arrival time and the cruise terminal, but these times are fairly typical in our experience.
Why so early? Well they need to get you off and clean the ship before the guests joining the next cruise can board!
Royal Caribbean International offers a few disembarkation options, depending on how fast you’d like to get off the ship or if you want some extra time to linger on board before you head to your next destination.
We’ll outline some of their main options and their benefits, so you can decide which one best suits your travel plans.
With a bit of planning and some insider knowledge, we’ll make sure you leave your Royal Caribbean vacation with plenty of fond memories and minimal hassles.
Understanding The Royal Caribbean Disembarkation Process
As I mentioned above, disembarking from a Royal Caribbean cruise can be a little bittersweet. We know we must say goodbye to our fantastic vacation, but we also want it to be as smooth as possible.
So, let’s dive into the disembarkation process to help it feel less daunting.
Disembarkation Briefing and Instructions
In the days leading up to disembarkation day, there’s a disembarkation briefing held onboard. If you are new to cruising or new to cruising with Royal Caribbean, I would definitely suggest attending this meeting, as it prepares you for what to expect on the final day.
This briefing is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions or clarify any concerns you might have about arriving and leaving the ship.
You will also be provided with disembarkation instructions in your cabin in the lead-up to the final day.
In fact, quite early on in the cruise, you will be asked to provide your onward travel details so that you can be assigned a departure time that fits with your onward flight schedule if you have one.
Typically priority is given to cruisers with early flights. If you have independent travel plans – for example, if you are driving home, you will typically be assigned a later departure time.
Methods of Disembarkation on Royal Caribbean
Self-Assist Cruise Ship Departure – Best Way To Get Off The Ship As Early As Possible
For self-assist departures, you can generally leave the ship any time between 6:45am and 9:45am.
In our experience, this is the best option if you don’t have too much luggage and want a quick departure from the ship on your own timescale. You’ll be responsible for taking your own luggage off the ship.
In my opinion, this gives us greater flexibility on when we leave the ship and we don’t have to worry about picking our luggage up in the disembarkation hall. That also means there is no chance of our luggage being misplaced!
It’s particularly useful for those with an early flight or just eager to start their journey home.
We did this on Wonder of the Seas and we were impressed by the straightforward process even for a ship of this size with so many passengers to get off.
Just remember to pack light and know that maneuvering bulky bags down narrow corridors can be a challenge.
Please be aware, however, that if you have a Royal Caribbean organized Airport Transfer or Shore Excursion you will not be able to use this option. You will not be able to use it if you require wheelchair assistance either.
Tagged Luggage Departure – Luggage Tags Required – Pick Up Luggage at the Dock
For travelers who prefer a more leisurely exit, without worrying about hauling their cases off the ship themselves, the tagged luggage departure might suit you better.
For Tagged Luggage Departures, your assigned departure time will be between 8:00am and 9:45am.
This method involves attaching numbered luggage tags to your baggage on the night before disembarkation.
The number you are assigned will depend on your travel plans and the information you provided about your onward travel plans earlier in the cruise.
Your stateroom attendant will provide you with the correct tags the day before disembarkation. Simply attach the tags securely to your bags and then leave your luggage outside of your stateroom before 10pm.

The advantage of this approach is not having to worry about handling any cumbersome luggage.
The numbered tags system ensures smooth and organized progress. The number matches a set departure time and also matches the area where you will find your luggage when you get off.
Just be aware that you may disembark later than with the self-assist process and the queues might be a bit longer.
Whatever method you choose, Royal Caribbean aims to make your disembarkation experience as seamless as possible and it is fair to say that they generally do a good job of that.
Final Day Operations – It’s Time to Leave The Ship
The final day operations typically start early, usually around 6 a.m. Passengers are assigned a specific disembarkation time based on a few factors:
- Your assigned luggage tag color
- Your travel arrangements (flights, transfers, etc.)
- Whether you’re participating in a shore excursion before leaving
They do ask you to ensure you vacate your stateroom by no later than 8am.
Unless we have an early flight, we often will sleep to about 7:15, then head up for breakfast at the Windjammer buffet at 8am, taking any luggage with us. Make sure to check your cabin carefully, including emptying your stateroom safe. I have heard so many stories of people leaving things behind in their cabin!
If you are not doing self-assist, be sure to listen out for Royal Caribbean staff announcing when it’s our turn to disembark. Once your luggage tag number is called keep your cruise Seapass card handy as well as a valid ID (such as a passport) for a smooth exit.
As you exit the ship, you will enter the disembarkation hall. You luggage will be ready for collection in the assigned number bays that match your luggage tags
Remember that on disembarkation day, we want to give ourselves plenty of time to smoothly complete the process. Things can happen in the cruise terminal that can cause delays and sometimes security lines can get a bit slow.
From our experience, it is best to plan for buffer time in case of anything unexpected. This way, we can ensure a stress-free end to our amazing cruise vacation.
Post-Disembarkation Logistics Once You Get Off Your Ship
Getting To the Airport or Train Station
Once we’ve waved goodbye to our fantastic Royal Caribbean cruise, it’s time to think about getting back to reality, specifically, getting from the Cruise Port to the Local Airport or Train Station.
Luckily, we’ve got some useful tips and insights to share on making this final leg of our journey as smooth as possible.
First up, you should think about your transportation options. There are a few to consider:
- Cruise Line Shuttle Services: Many cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, offer shuttle services from the cruise terminal to the Airport. While this might seem the most straightforward option, it will also probably be the most expensive.
- Independent Shuttle Services or Taxis: Most busy cruise ports will be served by local transportation and taxi firms offering shuttle services to local airports and other travel hubs. In our experience, this can save you a lot of money when compared to the cruise line’s own option.
- Ridesharing Apps: With popular apps like Uber and Lyft, getting a ride from the cruise port to the airport is a breeze. Simply download the app and book your ride. Remember, though, that high demand may lead to higher prices as both Uber and Lyft use dynamic pricing, based on demand.
- Rent a Car: Depending on where we are heading to, Car Hire can also be an option. For example in February next year, we will be arriving in Miami from a Transatlantic crossing and we will need to get to our vacation home near Orlando. A one-way car hire is actually going to cost me less than using the new Brightline fast railway system that connects Miami and Orlando Airport. Most Car Hire companies often provide free shuttles from cruise ports to their local Car Hire office.
Regardless of the transportation option we choose, it’s critical to give ourselves plenty of time. It’s better to arrive early at the airport and enjoy a leisurely coffee than risking a mad dash to catch your flight!
Be sure to check peak travel times between your cruise port and airport and plan accordingly.
One key piece of advice: don’t forget to double-check all our belongings before leaving the cruise terminal. There’s nothing worse than leaving a cherished souvenir or essential item behind!
Important Do’s and Don’ts for the Final Morning of a Cruise
Okay, let’s finish this article with some key do’s and don’ts for your Royal Caribbean disembarkation.
First and foremost, it’s essential to check your disembarkation time.
For a smooth departure, stick to your assigned departure time. It ensures everyone gets off the ship timely and avoids long lines and congestion.
Of course, we cannot forget the packing! Forgetting to pack is never a laughing matter, especially when you’re scrambling to gather your belongings.
So, to save you from last-minute stress, Pack your suitcase and as much of your carry-on items as you can the night before disembarkation.
Remember to check any local immigration and customs rules and be ready declare all purchases from onboard shops and foreign ports.
In many ports declaring items is mandatory, and it’ll save you from potential hassles with customs.
Before disembarkation day arrives, check your onboard expenses account and make sure it is all in order. If you have any discrepancies visit Guest Services sort things out. Most importantly make sure you have a credit card on file to settle your final bill.
No one ever wants to lose their prized possessions. So, take a quick photo of your luggage. It makes it easier to identify it if it goes missing. I also recommend using Apple Airtags and similar tracking devices.
Lastly, it can be handy to bring a day bag with you for the last day. This bag should have your travel documents, passports, and essential toiletries. That way, you’ll have everything you need, from brushing your teeth in the morning to disembarking with ease.
Following these crucial do’s and don’ts makes for a smoother disembarkation process. So, enjoy the last moments of your Royal Caribbean cruise, knowing you’re fully prepared.
