A Comprehensive Guide To Icon of the Seas – Royal Caribbean’s Latest Cruise Ship

Last Update:

In just a few short weeks, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas will begin its inaugural cruise season.

At 250,810 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world, capable of carrying nearly 10,000 passengers and crew members

With 20 decks, 7 pools, 9 hot tubs, and 6 record-breaking slides this ship is nothing short of spectacular.

It will be powered by liquefied natural gas, making it an eco-friendly option as well, which is great!

Although this ship is in a brand new class of its own (the Icon Class), it shares the “Neighborhood” concept introduced in Royal’s Oasis Class ships like Wonder of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas..

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned cruise veteran, the Icon of the Seas promises to offer something for everyone. From the luxurious cabins and suites to the diverse dining options and exciting attractions, this ship is sure to be a hit among our fellow cruisers.

As a particular fan of Royal Caribbean and everything they do, I can confidently say that the Icon of the Seas is a ship that you won’t want to miss, and I can’t wait to take a cruise on it.

Here’s what we are going to cover:-

The ICON OF THE SEAS – A Comprehensive Guide

So let’s begin by taking a look at the Icon of the Seas’ Neighborhoods.

The Icon of the Seas Neighborhoods

The eight Icon of the Seas Neighborhoods are:-

  • Aquadome – for lovers of water shows and acrobatics, nightlife, and fine dining
  • Central Park – a green oasis in the middle of the ship
  • Chill Island – a three-deck slice of paradise on the high seas
  • Royal Promenade – the ship’s “town center”
  • Surfside – the all-day destination for young families
  • Suite Neighborhood – paying for a bit of luxury comes with benefits!
  • The Hideaway – featuring the first suspended infinity pool at sea
  • Thrill Island – for adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers of any age

Each neighborhood on Icon has its own theme, vibe, and attractions.

Supercar Blondie Takes a Trip on Icon of the Seas

Let’s look at each of these neighborhoods in turn and discover what we should expect to see in each one.

Icon of the Seas “Aquadome” Neighborhood

At the front of the ship, you’ll find one of the most innovative features of the Icon of the Seas, the AquaDome

You might be surprised to see that the Aquadome is at the opposite end of the ship from the Oasis class AquaTheatres that preceded it. It is a completely new design that combines two signature Royal Caribbean experiences: the Solarium and the AquaTheater.

The AquaDome is a stunning glass-enclosed space at the front of the ship that offers amazing views of the ocean and the sky. It is a multipurpose space that changes throughout the day, from a relaxing oasis to a vibrant hotspot.

The space even features an amazing waterfall that falls from the ceiling to the pool below.

The Aquadome features the following guest experience areas:-

The Overlook Bar

The Overlook bar can be found on deck 14 and will feature a stunning 290-degree view from the front of the ship.

The bar will supposedly feature a large LED screen that will apparently display different scenes throughout the day, including sunsets, fireworks, and cityscapes.

It will serve a variety of drinks, from coffee and tea in the morning to cocktails and wine in the evening. You can also enjoy some light bites and snacks while you sip your beverage of choice.

The Overlook Pods

The Overlook Pods are what I think, make the Overlook bar unique.

Think of each pod as a mini-lounge that can accommodate probably about 8-10 people. They are rumored to include touch screens for mood lighting and music, but I haven’t seen that confirmed as yet.

The overlook pods should be perfect for a romantic date, a family outing, or a group of friends who want to experience something different.

The Icon of the Seas AquaTheater

Icon of the Seas AquaTheatre

Of course, the AquaTheater dominates the Aquadome neighborhood.

At night, the AquaTheater comes alive with amazing shows that will wow you with their creativity and skill. The pool is also surrounded by fountains that can create different patterns and colors.

The theater also features two 60-foot-high diving platforms, four robotic arms, and a falling water feature that add to the excitement.

The performers can fly through the air using winches and ropes, and even perform simultaneous aerial stunts. The theater will also feature a giant LED screen that can display images and videos to enhance the show.

If the AquaTheater shows are anything like those that have been featured on the Oasis-class ships, then we can expect them to appeal to all ages and tastes, with a mix of music, comedy, drama, and spectacle.

The Rye & Bean Coffee Lounge and Bar

Icon of the Seas - Rye & Bean

This is a first-of-its-kind venue on the Icon and is designed as a Coffee-bar by day and Cocktail bar by night.

In the morning, you can enjoy a variety of coffee drinks, from cappuccinos and lattes to cold brews and nitro brews. You can also grab some pastries, muffins, or sandwiches to start your day.

In the evening, Rye & Bean will transform into a lively cocktail bar that serves espresso cocktails and other coffee-infused libations. You can try drinks like an Espresso Martini, Irish Coffee, or my personal favorite, a Chocolate Martini!  The bar will also serve some light snacks.

Hooked Seafood Restaurant

I love a Chocolate Martini as an Aperitif, so after my chocolate fix at the Rye & Bean, what better place to dine than Hooked Seafood?

This specialty dining venue will serve up New England-style seafood dishes that I am sure will make your mouth water.

On the Oasis-class ships, Hooked Seafood has a varied menu that features appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts. Some of the highlights include the “Messy Fish” Sandwich, “Drunken” Mussels, and “The Captain’s Platter”..

Icon of the Seas Central Park Neighborhood

If you loved the innovative Central Park areas on the Oasis class ships, then you are going to love this area even more.

This is a green oasis in the middle of the ship, where you can stroll among thousands of real plants, listen to live music and enjoy new and varied dining options. You’ll feel like you’re in an urban park, but with ocean views.

Of course, it’s all well and good enjoying the floor-to-ceiling plants and bird song, but what about the venues in Central Park?

Izumi Hibachi and Sushi Restaurant

The Izumi Hibachi and Sushi restaurant offers a variety of Japanese dishes, from fresh sushi and sashimi to teppanyaki and ramen.

Izumi Hibachi is more than just a restaurant, it’s a show. You can watch the skilled chefs prepare your food right in front of you on the hot grills. You’ll be amazed by the chefs’ knife skills, flair, and humor.

You can choose from different combinations of meat, seafood, and vegetables, or try the chef’s special.

If you prefer a more quiet and intimate setting, you can head to the sushi bar.

Chops Grille Restaurant

I have to admit it. I am biased. If any restaurant I dine in features a Filet Mignon, then I cannot resist it. I’m sorry!  Chops Grilles is a standard dining feature on all of Royal Caribbean’s fleet, so I am already a huge fan. If you love steak, this is where to go!

This restaurant offers a variety of classic American dishes, from prime steaks and seafood to salads and desserts.

Trellis Bar

The Trellis Bar is located in the middle of Central Park and is surrounded by thousands of real plants, creating a natural and relaxing atmosphere.

The bar features an iconic trellis roof that allows natural light to filter through, which should give it a cozy and romantic feel. You could be in New York!

Park Cafe

If you are looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of the Windjammer at lunchtime, the Park Cafe in the Central Park neighborhood makes a great alternative

This cafe offers a variety of snacks, sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts. You can grab a quick bite to eat or enjoy a leisurely meal. You can also order coffee, tea, juice, or soda to go with your food.

Bubbles Champagne Bar

I have fond memories of the Champagne Bars in the old Sovereign class ships. These had a great setting at the bottom of the Atrium, and as a Diamond member, I could grab a free glass there at Happy Hour there, just before dinner.

So I am looking forward to using my free Diamond-member drinks vouchers at the new Bubbles Champagne bar at central park.

Royal Caribbean is describing this as a walk-up window bar – “just grab and go”. Hmmm. Not sure how that will work without the drinks package LOL

Lou’s Jazz and Blues Bar

Icon of the seas - Lou's Jazz Bar

This bar space will apparently resemble a New York or New Orleans Jazz Club and will feature a live band.

It looks like this bar will feature both inside and outside seating in the park area itself. I’m quite excited about this one, as I love hearing live music in a bar environment.

Chill Island Neighborhood on Icon of the Seas

Chill Island is described as “a three-deck slice of paradise” and I can see why.  This is where you will find four out of the seven pools on the ship.

Royal Bay Pool

This is set to be the largest swimming pool at sea and will dominate the neighborhood on the right-hand side (starboard) of deck 15.

Cove Pool

Cove Pool can be found on the opposite side of deck 15 (port side) and features a “disappearing edge” taking the pool right up to the side of the ship.  It’s not quite an infinity pool, but it will have a similar effect.

Swim & Tonic

Icon of the Seas Swim and Tonic swim-up bar

Head upstairs to deck 16 left (starboard) and you’ll find the wonderfully named Swim & Tonic pool.  This pool will feature the first swim-up bar on a Royal Caribbean ship and looks amazing!

Cloud 17 Pool

Icon of the seas cloud 17 pool area

On deck 17 you’ll find the fourth pool in the neighborhood, Cloud 17 is the adults-only area on Deck 17. Now I’m hoping the name is just to reflect that “high in the clouds” feeling you will get in this area and has nothing to do with the nearby smoking area LOL

Just like the Cove Pool, this pool with have the same innovative “disappearing edge” effect looking out onto the sea.

The Lime and Coconut

You can’t truly chill poolside until you have that nice cool drink in your hand, right?  Well, luckily there are four separate Lime and Coconut bar venues in the Chill Island neighborhood.

Cantina Fresca

Looking for a bit more Mexican Vibe than Caribbean? Then Cantina Fresca on deck 15 will be able to cure your Margherita fix.

El Loco Fresh

Sticking with the Mexican theme, and right next door to Cantina Fresca, is the El Loco Fresh that will cure every potential Taco Bell craving at Sea.

Don’t forget, however, that if you don’t have that Mexican craving, the Windjammer is just a little walk from here.

Royal Promenade Neighborhood

This neighborhood is the heart of the ship, featuring a bustling promenade filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Let me take a look at at some of the highlights.

Music Hall

The Music Hall is a two-story lounge (decks 3 and 4) that will host live music performances every night.

With a dance floor and a bar, it should be a perfect place to unwind after a long day at sea.

The Music Hall is set to feature different genres of music every night, from rock to jazz to pop, so there will be something for everyone.

Royal Theater

The Royal Theater is the ship’s main theater, where guests can enjoy Broadway-style shows, live music, and comedy acts. With comfortable seating and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, you should always make a point of catching the headline shows here..

Casino Royale

Icon of the Seas Casino Royale

As Royal’s fleet has got bigger the Casino has got wilder and now really resembles a little bit of Las Vegas on the sea! Icon of the Sea’s Casino will surely not disappoint!

Absolute Zero

Icon of the Seas Absolute Zero Ice-skating rink

Absolute Zero is the ship’s Ice-Skating rink and another record-breaker. It will be the largest ice skating rink at sea

As well as featuring stunning Ice shows, Absolute Zero will also host “Laser Tag: The Fight for Atlantis” an action-packed, glow-in-the-dark adventure

Sorrento’s

Sorrento’s is the ship’s pizzeria, serving up delicious authentic New York-style pizzas made to order. With a variety of toppings to choose from, guests can create their own perfect pizza.

Starbucks

For those who need their caffeine fix, Starbucks is conveniently located on the Royal Promenade. Guests can enjoy their favorite coffee drinks and snacks while taking in the lively atmosphere of the promenade.

Spotlight Karaoke

Spotlight Karaoke is the ship’s karaoke bar, where guests can sing their hearts out to their favorite songs. With a vast selection of songs to choose from and a lively atmosphere, it’s sure to be a hit with guests.

1400 Lobby Bar

Icon of the Seas Lobby Bar

The 1400 Lobby Bar is named after the unique hull number of the ship. What will make this bar quite different is that it is the first venue to open up the Royal Promenade to the outdoors with an ocean-facing terrace. This sounds really exciting and I can’t wait to see it.

Point and Feather

Icon of the Seas - Point and Feather British Pub

Point and Feather is the British-themed pub on the Royal Promenade. With a new style open layout, guests can enjoy a “proper” pint while watching live music performances.

The Pearl

The Pearl is something quite different from any feature we have seen on Royal Caribbean ships. It’s a sphere-shaped stairway that goes from deck 5 to 8. However, what makes this stairway such a feature is the sphere itself is a multi-media display.

So far only a few images have been shown of the sphere by Royal Caribbean, but I am assuming it will use similar technology to the outside display on The Sphere concert venue in Las Vegas.

Whatever it is, it must be pretty spectacular as we’ve never had a staircase at sea given a name before!

Escape Room

The Escape Room is a challenging puzzle game where guests must work together to solve clues and escape before time runs out. With different themes to choose from, it’s a fun and exciting activity for groups of friends and families.

Diamond Lounge

The Diamond Lounge is an exclusive lounge for Diamond and above members of the Crown and Anchor Society. With comfortable seating, it’s a great place to find a quiet spot to relax.

The Attic

Icon of the Seas - The Attic Comedy Club

The Attic is Royal Caribbean’s comedy club. On Wonder of the Seas I never missed this if there was a comedian on. It’s a great atmosphere – I love it!

Dueling Pianos

Icon of the seas - Dueling Pianos

Now this is very exciting. My one and only experience of a Dueling Piano bar was at the “New York New York” hotel in Las Vegas. I remember it being one of the highlights of my vacation and the place was absolutely jumping!

I can’t wait to see what Royal Caribbean does here. Will the Dueling Pianos be a nightly event? Will it be able to sustain that energy every night? Let’s wait and see.

Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar

Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar serves delicious pasta dishes and fine wines. With an elegant atmosphere and attentive service, it’s the perfect place for a romantic dinner.

Schooner Bar

Icon of the seas Schooner Bar

This is my favorite bar on any Royal Caribbean ship! The Schooner Bar is a nautical-themed bar that serves up classic cocktails and live music performances from the resident pianist. With comfortable seating and a cozy atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day at sea.

It’s also usually the venue for the trivia quizzes – but get there early if you want a seat!

Bolero’s

Bolero’s is the ship’s Latin-themed bar, serving up delicious Mojitos and live music performances. With a lively atmosphere and a dance floor, it’s the perfect place to salsa the night away.

Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade

Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade is the ship’s sports bar, featuring a variety of TVs showing live sports games. With a selection of arcade games and a menu of classic pub food, it’s the perfect place to catch a game with friends.

Surfside Neighborhood

This area is designed with young families in mind and it is designed to be an all-day neighborhood. It is packed with activities and dining options that will keep everyone entertained throughout the day.

Adventure Ocean

Adventure Ocean is Royal Caribbean’s Kids and Teens activity program.

Social 020

For teenagers, the Social 020 is an exclusive hangout area where they can listen to music, watch movies and play the latest consoles. This area is restricted to 13 to 17-year-olds.

Arcade

The Arcade is another exciting venue in Surfside, offering a range of classic and modern arcade games for all ages. With this being the newest ship in the fleet, it is sure to feature some of the latest state-of-the-art arcade games.

Surfside Bites

The perfect spot to grab a quick snack. The venue offers a range of delicious snacks, including burgers, hot dogs, and more.

Surfide Eatery

For a more substantial meal, Surfside Eatery is the place to be. The eatery offers a range of delicious dishes, from classic American fare to international cuisine.

Sugar Beach

Sugar Beach is a sweet spot for those with a sweet tooth. The venue is expected to offer a huge range of delicious desserts and treats, including ice cream, candy, and more. I wonder if it will include a discount code for your local dentist LOL

Pier 7

Pier 7 is yet another bar – I’m losing count of how many there are on board! Pub crawl, anyone?

The Lemon Post

Yes, you have guessed it. We have yet another bar! However, this time The Lemon Post is themed after a lemonade stand and will feature both a “kid-friendly” menu as well as adult beverages.

There is nothing quite more surreal than seeing a fairground carousel on a cruise ship. Royal Caribbean never disappoints.

Playscape

Playscape is a kid’s playground that’s perfect for getting the little blighters to burn off some energy LOL. If it is anything like the Playscape area on Wonder of the Seas, the kids will absolutely love this.

Splashaway Bay

Splashaway Bay is a kid’s water park with water slides, splash pads, and other water-based activities.

Watersedge Pool

Watersedge Pool is the pool that will adjoin Splashaway, so a great place for the adults to relax while keeping an eye on the kids.

Suite Neighborhood

The Suite neighborhood is a luxurious retreat exclusively for suite guests

The Grove

The Grove is a two-story sun deck (decks 18 and 19)  that features a private pool and hot tub.

The area will also feature an exclusive Bar and a separate dining room. No names or details about these locations have been revealed as yet.

The Hideaway Neighborhood

Icon of the Seas - The Hideaway neighborhood

This area is located aft of the ship on deck 15, and it promises to be a unique and exciting space for guests to unwind and enjoy some stunning views.

The Hideaway Pool

The main attraction of The Hideaway is the suspended infinity pool that hangs 65 feet over the Surfside neighborhood, seven decks below it.

This pool is the first of its kind on any cruise ship, and it promises to be an incredible experience for guests.

The design of the pool is meant to offer fantastic views of the aft of the ship, and it’s sure to be a popular spot for relaxation and fun in the sun.

The Hideaway Bar

The Hideaway Bar is meant to portray a Beach club vibe – think Mykonos or Majorca. It’s unique wrap-around design will offer amazing views out to sea.

Thrill Island

As soon as I heard about Thrill Island on Icon of the Seas, I knew this wasn’t going to be any ordinary ship.

This adventure park on the aft of Deck 16 is home to a variety of thrilling attractions that people of all ages can enjoy. From the largest waterpark at sea to the tallest waterslide to sail, Thrill Island has it all.

Category 6: Largest Waterpark at Sea

Icon of the Seas - Category 6 Water Park

Another record-breaker from Royal Caribbean. Category 6 is the largest waterpark at sea with six separate waterslides.

One of the most thrilling attractions at Category 6 is The Pressure Drop, the first open freefall waterslide at sea. Riders will experience a heart-pumping drop before plunging into the water below. Oh and just to clarify – don’t worry, that’s not into the Sea LOL

Crown’s Edge

Icon of the Seas - Crowns Edge Experience

Crown’s Edge is another exciting attraction at Thrill Island. This aerial adventure course is described as being “perfect for those looking to test their balance and agility”.

You will walk out onto a platform suspended over the sea and complete a challenge that combines a skywalk and zipline-type ride.

With my vertigo, there is absolutely zero chance of me being seen here!

Adrenaline Peak

This is the Icon of the Seas climbing wall. Climbing walls feature (I think) on all of Royal Caribbean’s fleet, but this attraction has been redesigned for Icon with racing lanes to allow you to compete with friends. See who can fall off first LOL

Basecamp

Icon of the Seas - Basecamp

Basecamp is Thrill Island’s dining area and bar, giving easy access to food and refreshments for cruisers using that area.

Desserted Milkshake Bar

Icon of the Seas - Desserted Milkshake Bar

For those with a sweet tooth, the Desserted Milkshake Bar is a must-visit. This retro-inspired milkshake bar offers a variety of delicious treats, including classic milkshakes and sundaes.

Lost Dunes

As a golfer myself, I’ve never understood the huge attraction that there seems to be for mini-golf on Royal Caribbean ships. It’s clearly not going away as this gets a prime piece of real estate on Icon of the Seas.

Flowrider

Another Royal Caribbean staple is the Flowrider. This is the amazing surf simulator that is both hilarious and amazing to watch, depending on who is on the ride at the time.

Other Areas of the Ship to Explore and Visit

When cruising on the Icon of the Seas, there will be plenty of other areas to explore and visit beyond the eight neighborhoods. Here are some of the other areas of the ship that I’m excited to check out:

Vitality Spa

After a day of exploring ports such as St. Maarten or Costa Maya, I’ll be looking forward to some relaxation at the Vitality Spa. With a variety of treatments and services, including massages, facials, and acupuncture, it’s the perfect place to unwind and pamper yourself.

To Dry For

If you’re looking for a new hairstyle, To Dry For is the place to go. This salon offers haircuts, blowouts, and styling services for both men and women. It’s the perfect spot to get ready for a night out at one of the ship’s many restaurants or bars. And what a great name, right?

Vitality Cafe

Located right next to the Vitality Spa, the Vitality Cafe is the perfect spot to grab a healthy snack or drink. With smoothies, salads, and other nutritious options, it’s a great way to refuel after a workout or spa treatment.

Windjammer Marketplace

For a more casual dining experience, the Windjammer Marketplace offers a wide variety of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From international cuisine to classic comfort food, there’s something for everyone. Plus, with views of the ocean, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy a meal.

The Windjammer Marketplace can be found on all of Royal Caribbean’s fleet and all of them get very busy! Just be prepared for it and honestly, you will find a seat.

Coastal Kitchen

If you’re looking for a more upscale dining experience, Coastal Kitchen is a great option. With a focus on fresh, local ingredients, the menu features dishes inspired by the Mediterranean and beyond. Plus, as a suite guest, I’ll have access to this exclusive restaurant.

Sports Court

For those looking to stay active while on board, the Sports Court is a great option. With basketball, volleyball, soccer, and (yay!) pickleball. there are plenty of opportunities to get moving.

Retail Opportunities Galore!

You may have noticed that as I was going through the various neighborhoods I didn’t mention any of the retail outlets. Suffice to say, there are lots of shops on this ship! If you like a bit of retail therapy at Sea, then you are going to love this ship.

When dID Icon of the Seas Launch?

On January 27, 2024 for its Inaugural Cruise, Icon of the Seas left on a round-trip cruise from its home port of Miami and heading to St Kitts, St Thomas, and Cococay.

Icon of the Seas was originally scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2022, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, her construction plans were delayed by a year.

Once launched, Icon of the Seas will be the first of three LNG-powered (liquefied natural gas) ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet.

How can I book a cruise on Icon of the Seas?

Booking a cruise on Icon of the Seas is a straightforward process that can be done online.

To book a cruise on Icon of the Seas,  either contact your preferred Travel Agent or follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Royal Caribbean website and navigate to the “Find a Cruise” section.
  2. Enter the desired dates, destination, and ship (in this case, Icon of the Seas).
  3. Browse the available sailings and select the one that best fits your preferences.
  4. Choose a stateroom category and select any additional packages or amenities.
  5. Enter passenger information and payment details to complete the booking.

It’s important to note that pricing and availability for Icon of the Seas cruises may vary depending on the sailing date, stateroom category, and other factors. It’s always a good idea to compare prices and options across multiple sailings to find the best deal.

Will prices for Icon of the Seas come down?

Many people are wondering whether prices for this highly anticipated cruise ship will eventually come down. The prices are relatively high right now as it is the newest addition to the fleet and it’s the biggest! Everybody wants to experience it.

While it’s impossible to predict the future with certainty, there are a few factors that suggest that prices may indeed become more affordable in the future.

The initial launch of a new cruise ship is always a major event, and cruise lines tend to price their cabins at a premium during this time. As the initial excitement around Icon of the Seas dies down, it’s likely that prices will become more reasonable.

Of course, it’s also worth noting that the price of a cruise is affected by a wide range of factors, including the time of year, the length of the cruise, and the cabin category. It’s possible that some travelers may be able to find more affordable options by booking during less popular times or by choosing a less luxurious cabin category.

So, will the Icon of the Seas Exceed Our Expectations?

Icon of the Seas - Nightime image of the Aft of the ship

I’ve been following the development of Icon of the Seas since details were first released by Royal Caribbean. I truly believe this ship will be a game-changer in the industry.

For me, it’s the amazing and innovative pools, the newly combined Solarium and Aquatheatre areas, and the incredible record-breaking at-sea waterpark that makes this ship totally irresistible.

Royal Caribbean is doing some heavy marketing of the ship and has even secured the services of Lionel Messi, the most decorated player in football history. He has been appointed the “Icon of the Icon”.

I’ll be booking….as soon as the prices start to come down 😉 (Hey I’m a canny Scot, remember!).

And don’t worry, if you miss out on the inaugural Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas season, the next Icon-class ship, will be launching in 2025 ( Star of the Seas named in an official release from Royal Caribbean). Exciting times ahead!
